Do you have any guidelines for purchasing kid-friendly fabric?

I picked up a nice slip covered sleeper and a friend is going to sew a new slipcover and I need to find a fabric that would clean up well and hold up to active kids. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Most upholstery fabrics today are treated against most spills that would occur with kids.

Another way would be to slip cover with a lighter fabric that can be taken off and thrown into a washing machine for a quick clean.
