Find Your Chairs Uncomfortable? Maybe Memory Foam is the Answer

Find your cushion foam uncomfortable? Maybe memory foam is the answer.

Originally developed by NASA to relieve the pressure during space shuttle take-offs, it now is used in medical applications for patients who are bed bound and suffering from pressure sores for long periods of time. From there it has been mass produced for mattresses and has become cheaper to buy.

So, if you have family members who have to sit in a chair for long periods of time, the regular foam can be changed to memory foam quite easily by a professional upholsterer. If you only have to change the foam in the cushion, it most likely can be done yourself. Just undo the zipper in the back and remove the old foam. Measure and cut your memory foam to the same size and install it back into the cushion cover. To cut the foam you will need a very sharp knife or a electric carving knife will do the trick.

You have to be careful buying this foam on the market today because a lot of manufacturers have begun producing it. This has helped the price to come down but in the same breath, has allowed a greater number of low quality, cut rate foams on the market. Generally speaking the more you pay, the better quality you will get. The more expensive foams will give the better comfort and will not wear out as fast

Other things to consider when buying this type of foam is the density. I would recommend somewhere between 3.5 and 4 lb density. Anything higher, 5lb, will feel stiff unless that is the feel you want. Also, you have to be careful because of the insider stories of manufacturers putting less expensive fillers, like sand, into foam to save money. So, buying from big name brands as TempurPedic is a good practice because they have a invested interest in assuring their customers get only the highest quality of foam.

If you are upholstering that old chair maybe you can consider using memory instead of regular foam. The extra expense might make sitting down a more comfortable experience.
